An existing client wanted to launch a new line of sports equipment. But before making heavy investments into manufacturing and distribution, they wanted to validate the size of the market and get a solid understanding of the target market.

Our survey reached out to a U.S. general population and then filtered down to the addressable market by using key filters, such as household size, presence of children, and the environment where the sports equipment would be used.

First, we captured the size of the market opportunity. We then evaluated receptiveness to new ways of displaying weekly specials and promotional items to fit a specific target market. We dug deeper on perceived costs and willingness to pay a premium price for the client’s new product, including baseline entry points.

Our Recommendation

We discovered that this new premium product intrigued consumers, especially during the time of COVID-19 when uncrowded outdoor activities were highly valued. However, the barrier to entry was higher than expected, with key concerns about limited storage space, requiring a redesign of the storage solutions.
